There may also be a problem with the number of connections that the firewall will allow. Whenever we have stake conference, all of the iPads and iPhones that have ever connected to the network (anywhere in the stake since we use the same SSID and passwords throughout the stake), automatically connect, and if we turn on a computer that needs to connect, we can't get an IP address. We then have to power-cycle the firewall (Cisco PIX box -- DHCP server) before it will connect. This is also happening in one of our wards.

Available IP addresses does come into play with the Cisco PIX 501 since the default number of licensed IP addresses is ten. It was possible to have this increased in the past but not now. But for the purposes of the OP's described situation this is an unlikely contributor.

To state that any device that has ever connected will get priority is not correct unless the device(s) is(are) given assigned IP addresses. With long duration DHCP leases this may give the impression that this is happening. But the default DHCP lease time for the PIX 501 is around 1 or 2 hours. The more likely scenario here is that the available IP addresses are leased by the time the computer tries to connect.

This procedure releases all the DHCP leases. If the computer is connected by wire and not using the wireless then it would be logical that it would get an IP address lease before the wireless devices.

I believe the 501 was only licensed for 10 connections to the outside, but it would lease more IPs then that.

Still, even with the new firewall, the way they've been set up, there's only space for about 60 devices at any one time.

Serious? Can you confirm that? Remind me to disable wireless when we are trying to webcast stake conference...

The new firewall provides 52 DHCP address by default. This can easily be increased at the discretion of the stake president by having the stake technology specialist contact the Global Service Center.
