FHC Internet Access Policy

#1

Post by Gutknecht »

I am trying to get clarification on the policy of allowing patrons to connect their personal computers to the FHC Internet. The documents available on the Tech Specialist site refer to a Family History Center Internet Access Policy document. Can someone post a copy of it or at least the section that addresses this issue? Thanks. Rick

Connecting Patron-Owned Hardware
To ensure that Internet filtering safeguards are in place, patrons may connect their personal computers, handheld devices, or other equipment to a center's Internet connection only where approved by priesthood and family history center leadership. The center staff should ensure that any patron-connected computer are connected though the Internet filtering safeguards.
You can ask your FHC Director to get the complete policy from

There may be some complications if older wireless setups are involved as older systems required installing an Odyssey client. Installing that on a patron computer would be a licensing issue.

Even under current guidelines, I think you have to run WPA or WPA2, which means setting up a password.

Note that while connected to the FHC Internet, the patron has even less access then they would have at home. The Church filters out sites which may be objectionable. Furthermore, the things needed to gain access to the FHC Portal are NOT to be loaded on patron machines. So I really doubt if bringing a laptop to a FHC will result in getting the same access as the FHC computers have.

As Russell noted the FHC Director has this information or can get it through their online account. It is a good idea to have a copy available in the FHC for all workers to reference. This copy can be an electronic copy on one or all the computers or a hard copy.

In our stake FHC we have set up two stations with a hard wire network connection specifically for patrons who wish to connect their portable devices. We have posted the Internet connection policies at these stations. Wireless connections are not available because we do not give out the LDSAccess passkey.
