This error may have been a due to TM doing an automatic data refresh at an odd time during the firewall upgrade. Glad to know that the upgrade ended successfully.jeromer7 wrote:I used the new Start Upgrade button on the Tools tab in TM yesterday to upgrade an existing firewall. ... CONNECT THE FHC TO THE "RESERVED" FIREWALL PORT
If the meetinghouse contains a Family History Center (FHC), it makes sense to connect the FHC to the “Reserved” port (881W firewall Port 2). That way the cabling is ready if a Special Purpose Zone needs to be created for the FHC. Only "official" FHCs (having a CDOL unit number that is separate from the stake/ward) needs a Special Purpose Zone, and all other FHCs should be connected to the Public Network. If a Special Purpose Zone is not needed, then the "Reserved" port can be used for the Public Network. So either way it makes sense to connect a FHC to the "Reserved" port of the firewall.
The Upgrading an Existing Meetinghouse Firewall document contains a useful network diagram and instructions.
This being said, STSs must remember to contact the Global Service Center to create a Special Purpose Zone if an "official" FHC exists in the meetinghouse. It may take a 2-3 days for the SP Zone to be created (due to GSC staffing levels), so take that into account when planning the firewall upgrade.

Re: Meetinghouse Firewall Upgrade Available to FMs/STSs
More than 2,000 MH firewall upgrades have taken place as word is getting out about the new Meetinghouse Firewall configuration. With the growing number of wireless devices available, a surprising number of MHs max out network connections on a weekly basis.
Previously Facilities Managers received information about the upgrade, and over the next few weeks an email message is being sent to STSs to encourage them to upgrade their meetinghouse firewalls--which will help alleviate the issue of limited network connections.

The process is relatively painless - but there are many extra steps needed when the FHCs are using Deep Freeze.

Yes, extra steps when there's a FHC, but how does Deep Freeze play into this?aclawson wrote:but there are many extra steps needed when the FHCs are using Deep Freeze.

At the FHC I recently completed all of the printers are coded to IP so you have to add the steps of thawing and freezing the patron machines to the remapping of the printers.

Remember if your meeting house is on basic dsl, opening the router for more connections will cause problems. if your on basic dsl, i would not do the upgrade till forced to.

That only works if you consider "first come" an acceptable way to dole out limited connectivity.rolandc wrote:Remember if your meeting house is on basic dsl, opening the router for more connections will cause problems. if your on basic dsl, i would not do the upgrade till forced to.

Its what we HAVE to do to insure the network works, outside of the Utah bubble internet speeds are much lower.russellhltn wrote:That only works if you consider "first come" an acceptable way to dole out limited connectivity.rolandc wrote:Remember if your meeting house is on basic dsl, opening the router for more connections will cause problems. if your on basic dsl, i would not do the upgrade till forced to.
So our choice is a limited system that still works or one that gets overloaded every Sunday and bottlenecks till nothing works.
Gordon can we work on a public IP script for these situations? say 50 - 70 users max? I know of several buildings that have done the update because they heard it would make there system faster, suprise it didnt and now they bottlekneck every sunday because to many people can get on the network at one time.
Gordon you have my email for more details
A warning needs to go out to all FMs letting them know not to do this update if they are stuck on basic DSL

Re: Meetinghouse Firewall Upgrade Available to FMs/STSs
I have one building with DSL and 3 overlapping wards. I think it's 3Mbit. And the usage graphs do flat top at 3000kb/s. DHCP reports 80-90 users. I've not heard any complaints from that building.
I've got another single-ward building on 4G. The peak usage falls just short of 4Mbit. Peak users is 90. The complaints I've gotten from there is when the 4G goes down - which seems fairly frequently. It seems the tower does a reset or something and the connection is broken. The unit has to be rebooted to get a connection again.
