FYI, the following text was added to TM:
"Internet Speed Test links to speedtest.lds.org which measures up/download speeds to and from lds.org, which may be used to measure transmission speeds from that source. Technology specialists may use other Internet speed test tools to determine local Internet service provider data throughput."

Good. The one thing I'd add is to make it clear that it's the local client that's being tested - not the firewall. And that any other network activity would result in a low reading.

So if the WiFi is active and folks are using it, the results of the speed test will be slower?

I always prefer to run the speed test using a wired computer when I am the only person in the building.

Yes. The speedtest can only measure how much speed that one client is able to get. If anyone else is using the network, it won't be a measurement of the network's overall capacity.

And it's not running the test at the firewall, but on the client. So if you're running the test at home, you're testing your home network. If you're wireless, you're also testing your wireless connection.

Think of it this way, if you have a 10mb connection and someone is streaming a video at 5mb, you're only going to see half of your available BW during a speed test. Your results will be more accurate if the building is empty, and yes, use a wired computer if at all possible.

Oh, I wish. But thank you for the answer.

I got 200k (yes, K) down, so I used the occasion to test the new WiFi turnoff feature, then got 550k. When I turned WiFi back on, we were down to 100k.

I figured it had to do with the 96 devices entwined into the WiFi. Just wanted to make sure. We have multiple issues, and this knocks out a few variables.

I'd imagine that if you did this in a empty building, you wouldn't see any change with the WiFi on or off.

Makes sense. Just wanted to confirm that the speed test was for the wired computer and that WiFi took away from the pipeline. It does.

Post by pete.arnett »

When will speedtest.lds.org be working?
From TM.LDS.org > Tools > Misc > Execute Speed Test > opens into a browser page and you get an "Expired License" message
