Slow Internet Connection

For the past several months our meetinghouse Internet connection has been spotty at best and virtually non-existent at worst. There's no wifi signal in many of the rooms in our meetinghouse. And in the rooms where there is a wifi signal, the connection speed is often really slow. I recently did two Internet speed tests using an app on my phone and got .04 Mbps and .01 Mbps, respectively.

I mentioned this problem to our stake executive secretary, and he said he would relay my message to our stake technology specialist. However, that was a few months ago, and the Internet connection is still spotty and slow. Assuming our SES relayed my message to our STS, and there was nothing that the STS could do about this problem, is there anyone else that can help get this problem resolved?

As STS I never mind when people report issues directly to me - have you tried asking the STS directly?

That's two assumptions being made. I think I'd try to talk to the STS directly, or find another route to get the issue to him before trying to go around him.

Have you tried visiting the building mid-week to see if it's better than on Sunday?

It should be noted that speed tests can't tell how fast your connection is - it can only tell how much capacity is available to you. The low reading could be due to a bad connection, or it could be that everyone else is soaking up all the capacity.

However, with readings that low, I'm inclined to think there's a problem with the connection. But a visit when no one else is in the building should give some clues.

My first question is what type of Internet connection do you have? From the numbers you are describing, it sounds like you are using a dial-up connection instead of a direct connect.

Once I find out what type of connection, then I would see if the equipment is bad, such as the "modem" that the Internet service provider has. Once you find that information out, then you can determine what the next step is in troubleshooting.

Good question. If it's DSL, I understand your pain. We had (past tense!) 2 buildings on DSL and every month the speed test would be slightly slower than the previous until it was at a crawl. A service call to CenturyLink would result in it instantly resetting back to the original speed, only to have the whole process start over again. Drove me nuts.

Did you find out what the problem was? Sounds like something that may be specific to that companies policies.

I've had DSL at home for some time. It's been fine for me, although it might be a bit slow for a entire building. I didn't have problems unless the line quality went bad or the modem caved in after several years.

I did have one church building installed with DSL. The installer (probably FM) failed to put the required filters on the phone line to protect the DSL signal. That can do wonders. And I almost think it has to be something like that to get those kinds of speeds.

Nope, but I've read about of this occasionally happening to others as well.

Interesting. When we had DSL installed in 2 of our buildings, we were told it had to be a separate circuit from the live phone lines (sometimes called dry loop DSL). This prevented the need for any filters.

Yes, my FM group hasn't played by the rules I've been told about in the past. Perhaps the rules have changed. I don't know. I don't have access to the rules they've been given.

But for this chapel, I think one of the problems was that the conduit was full. I'm not sure as 'dry loop' was even an option.
