Cisco Firewalls and Access points - General Experience

#1

Post by loompeter »

I served as a Stake Technology Specialist for a short period of time. I had to admit that most of this time, I did spend on diagnosing Wireless Internet problems in my Stake.

I just want to express my opinion on the experience I had gained during this period of time.
We don't see the whole picture do we? Most of us don't, yet we try to diagnose the problem with the system (...and I mean this in the nicest possible way).
As far as I know, the Church controls all the Firewalls and access points globally and remotely from the Church Headquarters. The cisco Firewalls (800 series) and Access Points employ a very complex Hardware Configuration menu and settings that are stored in the Software within the Firewall and Access Point unit itself. These settings can only be altered with the appropriate software from the manufacturer. I have reason to believe that these settings and configurations can adversely affect the way in which the Hardware behaves and operates, not to consider all the different versions of software updates that available for these devices.
I think I would have difficulty fufilling this calling even if I were a trade's qualified Network Administrator with all the revelant experience... (if I don't have sufficient rights to view and modify the Firewall and Access Point's settings and configurations)

Ummmm... Are we really trying to extend beyond our own capabilites. I wondered if we should be turing to the Global help desk more often!

Cheers, and thank you all!

I am new to the calling but I was just looking over different materials and i did see somewhere the ability to remote into the firewall etc as well as reset it remotely from your home for instance.

I am from a computer background so my stress may be less, but I know there is allot for me to learn, thus the reason I am on the forums reading all I can today.

Go to tm.lds.org. It doesn't let you remote into the firewall but it does provide quite a bit of information about it. If you are the STS and you're calling has been correctly recorded you should be able to reset it from there.
