Download for Libre Office Blocked as Freeware?

Postby jsmackley » Mon Aug 27, 2012 3:43 pm

I've noticed that on mls.lds.org, the recommended offering for document/spreadsheet software is now called Libre Office and not Open Office. I've been able to use the link to get to the Libre Office web site, but once I click on the the download link, I get the blocked message from the church firewall. The message indicates that it's blocked as being freeware.

Is this a mistake or was it overlooked? I haven't called the GSC yet, I just thought I'd ask this forum first.

P.S. I am the Stake Technology Specialist.

On the LibreOffice download page, below the "Main Installer" link you'll see an "Info" link. If you click that, you'll see a variety of mirror sites that you can use to download the software. My guess is that whatever mirror site was automatically selected for your location is classified by the meetinghouse firewall as a file sharing site, or something similar. But you should be able to find another mirror that is not blocked.

It's probably hard for the GSC to keep up with the wide variety of mirror sites that LibreOffice uses for downloading its software....

Let us know what you find with the mirror site, I've got a couple of things that broke recently due to a Sophos Update. I have attempted to work through a process that doesn't exist for exception consideration, but it doesn't seem to be something that has been contemplated.

Thanks, I hadn't thought to try a mirror site. I'll do that as soon as I can and respond to this thread.

Speaking of Sophos issues.

I don't want to fork the thread but is there another thread that deals with sophos failing to update after the v10 deploy? Some PCs in my FHC get the updates, some fail. Point me to that if a thread exists.

I think you want the thread Anyone Else Noticed the new Sophos? (in which you made the most helpful post).

I just checked the 'info' link that lists the mirrored sites and I received the same blocked message as before. My stake is using Extended Restricted setting on the firewall.

I am able to get the install program by downloading it from home, so I am able to install Libre Office. I just need to use a usb drive to do it.
