The signal strength has also improved since the APs are no longer acting like "good neighbors" by dropping their transmission strength to prevent interference with another AP.

I'll second both ideas.

Our plan is hardwired drops in areas such as: Bishop & Clerk offices, 3 drops in chapel (pulpit controls, front of rostrum, rear of chapel), cultural hall at stage, RS room, Library, Stake Offices, Satellite cabinet, Family History, Phone Room.
Me and my stake must have taken the easy way out. Most of my buildings were built in the late 60's to mid 70's. We decided to only hard wire the Bishop and the Clerk's offices in the wards. At the stake center we added the Stake Clerk office, Stake President's office and the high council room.

I didn't even think about doing the other rooms. I am personally letting wireless take care of those rooms. We have not had a need to put drops in those other rooms. I know that the new building that we are having built will have all those drops, but in my "old" buildings, we didn't add it.

Even though I don't like wireless, but For the most part wireless will do most everything, like showing video and so forth. Now to use wireless for PVC or webcasting isn't a good thing. I have things setup to use hard wire for those any way.

This past week the FM group over our buildings upgraded the WIFI in all three buildings in the Stake. Now coverage is stronger and available throughout the building. I was informed by the Stake Tech Specialist that the previous WIFI set up was not to the same spec that the FM group used.

Thanks for all the info.

JeffTurgeon- I use WIFI Analyzer all the time. It's a great app!

Chris, I am the STS in our Stake and looking to upgrade the wireless equipment in the Stake Center. Do you know what your FM group upgraded your equipment too?

I am trying to figure out the best configuration and the best equipment to use for this upgrade and am leaning toward using 4 access points and one high-end wireless router . Does anyone have any suggestions on what equipment might serve me best for my needs?

Thanks,

Rick Stringham

The good news is that you don't even have to worry about what equipment to put in, since it's not your responsibility to decide. As you can read in the wiki under Wireless networking, the FM group is responsible for ordering the equipment. It will be a Cisco 881w wireless firewall/router, and then Cisco 1041 WAPs as needed.

See the section Who sets up a wireless meetinghouse network? to understand how it is actually installed.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.

Rick-
I'm glad that aebrown responded, because I was not involved. It was set up one week and just worked. Good luck with your install.

There is a technology solution that may be available as soon as late this year for United States locations, and that is what is called 'white space' devices.

When the FCC set up the TV service in the late 40s, there were spaces between channels, and space where there are no channels. What was left after everything was taken over the last 60+ years is still there, and recently the FCC set up rules for wi-fi devices that would utilize these unused parts of the TV spectrum to broadcast wi-fi signals somewhat further than most home and commercial units do now. The claim is that it may be possible in some cases to create a single hotspot with a single device that might cover more than a mile in diameter, most are expected, however, to cover a few hundred feet, making it possible to better cover homes, and in our cases, meetinghouses, and the signals will go through walls better too than the current 2.4ghz bands use. Some of this will be in the 400-500mhz (TV channels 14-51 excluding 37) or even lower spectrum if on TV channels 2-13.

Watch for announcements. Some may come out this fall.

Unfortunately the white space wireless doesn't support roaming around currently nor are there any devices you can embed into laptops and such. Current devices seem to have a throughput of only 16mbps. It may offer more ISP choices later down the road though.

When FM installs a firewall they usually put it where the internet connection comes into the building, which is my case is where the phone line patch panel is. This is often not the best place for wireless coverage.
