Disposal of Local Unit supported Computers

#1

Post by michaelpanama »

Our Stake bought a Mac computer several years ago to assist with Vidyo conferencing. Vidyo did not work well with our stake due to the large number of participants that need to join remotely so we are switching to google hangout. The downside is google hangout does not play nice with Macs so we are looking to switch to a basic del.

What is the policy on disposing of a unit supported computer? Same as with the FM group? THe next question is can we sell it to help pay for the new computer :)

Stakes can buy computers for webcasting (see Meetinghouse Technology Policy). PVC or similar would seem to me to be a gray area.

Retired computers must have their hard drives erased (Meetinghouse Technology Policy 4.11). I'm not sure of the requirements for disposal. I think the critical part is to document how and to whom it was transferred. If disposed, then something showing that it was sent to a e-waste facility. Just in case it turns up in a illegal dump in the future.

If the computer was bought with church funds, I don't see a problem in selling it to try and recover some of those funds. If it was a donation, then that would be a problem since wards and stakes can't accept donations to the budget.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

This was the council given to my stake president when he inquired about selling some stake purchased equipment that was no longer needed.
