New Technology Specialist

#1

Post by jsto03 »

I am a brand new Assistant Stake Clerk-technology specialist. I have never been a ward clerk or anything of the sort. I'm a bit nervous about my new calling! Any suggestions as I start this calling would be greatly appreciated. I guess the biggest question I have is---- will I survive this? I have been watching training videos and whatnot, but wondered if anyone has any suggestions on what I should do right out of the gates, etc.

Thanks

The two common things that you will need to know are 1. How to setup equipment for General Conference Priesthood Session and 2. How to setup equipment for Stake Conference. Normally the previous Technology Specialist would show you where all the equipment is and how to set it up. You will need to know how to setup a projector and connect it to the satellite feed.
Some of your equipment will be listed here https://tm.lds.org.
It would also be helpful to know where your internet connections come into the stake center and where the access points are, in case you need to reboot them. This is also needed for each ward. If you don't know where these are don't worry there is no rush in getting everything learned right away.

Get to know you Facilities Manager (FM Group) or his mechanic for your Stake. He/they know the physical side of the stake buildings since they service everything from landscaping to IT.

Go step by step through the training. The actual most important thing is to meet with the stake presidency and create the stake vision. These are the matching orders to get the entire state on the same page. Is critical to your success.

As a TS for almost 7 years, it's a calling that can be very rewarding. Most important is common sense. Make sure you are the only one with keys to the equipment! If anyone else knew more than you do, they'd be the TS. Know what does what. Take the time to push buttons, read manuals. Last week I found some new stuff that the system could do, like play what's on your laptop in the building, as well as broadcast to other buildings! Don't think I'll ever do that, but it's nice to know. Next, take pictures of all the Serial Numbers and equipment. Easy way to see if anyone is getting into your space and "Borrowing something". Have a computer. The stake should give you a laptop to control camera's etc., don't be afraid to ask. Memorize the LDS tech line number. Since most buildings now don't have phones, keep yours handy. If there is a problem, they are your best line of defense. Keep up with TS church information. Scan it every couple of days. The church makes changes, and sometimes you find out the hard way, in the middle of using the equipment. Keeping up on what's new is a sure way to keep out of trouble. Lastly, any and every time you need to use the equipment, test it first. The craziest things happen at the last minute, just be ready and ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a Plan B. If it breaks, I will do A/B/C. Make sure you know what to do when you lose the signal. What to do when you can't hear anything, and what to do when the stake president says "is it ready?" Remember, this is a calling that will bless many members who love to watch as they always have, at church. I have had many "Thank you" moments that have lifted my spirit and filled my heart with the knowledge that this is a calling that HF knows you can handle. Enjoy......

That would be very stake dependent. That assumes you're doing webcasting and doing it using a remote camera control. Some setups don't use computers.
