Allowing Husband and Wife both Previously Sealed now divorced to Pay Their Tithing Together on line.

Postby farmerj » Sun Mar 20, 2016 9:29 am

I have an issue whre a couple in our ward who were sealed previously to other spouses and are both now divorced from those spouses. They were married to each other in a civil ceremony about 18 months ago and are planning to be sealed to each other this coming October.
However, currently when they try to enter their tithing jointly on line the system pulls up their previous spouses under each of their names.
Is there a solution to resolve this problem or will they just have to wait until they are sealed to each other?

Were the divorces recorded on their church membership records? And was the marriage recorded on their membership records?

The capability for joint donations was removed about six years ago. Donations today can only be linked to one membership record. What appears to be the ability to make joint donations is in fact the option for a member to have their spouse's name appear on the printed donation record.

On the online donations page click "Settings" in the Donations menu. In the "Preferences" section there is an option to "Display spouse name". Note the comment for that option that states; "When this box is checked, your spouse'’s name will be displayed along with yours on all donor statements and donation slips. (Note: Although your spouse's name will appear on donation slips and statements, donations are recorded to individual membership records.)"

Make sure the divorces were properly recorded on both of their membership records. Also make sure their marriage is properly recorded on both of their membership records.

Make sure their current marriage is recorded ON their individual records. Since it was a civil divorce and re-marriage, that's going to be up to the ward to record it. This should not be confused with household grouping - that's a completely different thing.

Otherwise, this sounds like a bug. I'd expect the on-line donation system to pull from the current marriage and not from the sealing.

If the membership records do have everything recorded correctly, I wonder if turning off this option and saving, then turning it on again would force the system to pick up the new spouse's name.

I'm wondering if there's some confusion because they were married before - perhaps the system does allow them to share information from when they were married. I'm not sure what the system is designed to do in this situation. But if that's the case, I'd expect to see something about allowing the current spouse to see the appropriate information.
