need some tips on organizing a box full of keys

I don't know if the church has procedures on this. I've never found anything about it. There is a small "key box" in the clerks office. The keys inside are VERY disorganized though. Many of them are not labeled. I don't really know how to go about identifying keys and organizing them in a proper way.

The current box is designed to be hung on the wall. The keys inside are designed to hang inside the box. The box currently resides inside a filing cabinet and since it is not hanging on the wall, the keys just rattle around inside. The box is damaged and needs to be replaced but when I search for "key boxes" the results are all identical to what we already have. Is there another style of box that will help us to organize our keys more effectively?

I'm not sure I'm picturing exactly what you currently have. In our stake, most of the wards have something like this key box, which makes it easy to organize the keys. Some variations on that keybox have a little chart on the inside of the door that explains what each key is for. You can also write each key tag a description of what the key is for.

The key boxes are mounted on a wall, and then the key to the key box is secured in some place that the right people have access to -- often a filing cabinet or other locked place. These kinds of key boxes depend on gravity to keep the keys organized, so placing that kind of key box horizontal in some other drawer seems like it would lead to chaos.

The FM group would typically supply these boxes and mount them. Work with your stake PFR if you need a new box or to have one mounted.
