I find myself with unlimited access to ArcView and in need of a new hobby. What are some interesting and useful things I can do with this? I've already sanitized the addresses in our ward (a handful of members listed the wrong zip code which resulted them mapping outside of our ward and stake) and ran a membership density map (our members are spread remarkable evenly across our boundaries). What information would you like to see displayed on a map?

Oh, there's probably a number of things that can be thought of.

What is the distribution of:
  • Elders Quorum members
  • Single parents
  • Youth
  • YSA
  • Seniors
The idea is to see if the distribution is uneven in certain categories that may shape the way the ward functions. Or, considerations in disaster response.

That'll be easy enough - though it would be nice if I could actually export this data directly instead of having to resort to wizardry to get it.

Leader locations and distribution might be another one.

A fun one might be distance travelled for HT or VT. It might also cause leaders to think about how things are assigned. If I can do my whole route in the same day it is about 35 miles total. If it breaks into individual trips it jumps to about 55 miles.

Moving forward the way to go may be a cloud approach to providing limited and targeted function geospatial apps to local leadership. It will need to be limited in function and access (to local leadership) to minimize licensing costs for the geospatial app, cloud processing time, and any outside data needed. A more general public type geospatial app community is developing, disrupting the market. Soon limited function GIS apps will become fast and be affordable.
