Standardized Telephone Number Style

Postby jdelaney » Tue Mar 27, 2012 11:10 am

Are there any plans for standardizing telephone number styles? For example, the way a number is typed into a membership record or membership record request is kept until changed by a clerk. I propose that the software be modified to force the same style for all U.S. telephone numbers at the time the number is entered. I am not concerned about which style is used, only that it be the same for all. I happen to use the style 000-000-0000. Other possible styles could be 000 000-0000, (000) 000-0000, 000.000.0000, etc. Also, there will need to be an optional field for extensions.

This first came to light when my stake president asked to have all phone numbers in ward and stake directories follow the same style, especially the inclusion of the area code (there are multiple area codes used in our stake). The only way to do this now is to have all ward clerks go into the records of heads of families and change the style of those that do not follow the chosen style. If separate styles for non-U.S. areas can be established, that would be good, too.

This was discussed a while back at some length in the thread Phone Number Standarization.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.

This may be somewhat of a challenge as the members are able to change their numbers via the profiles in the on-line directory.

Not currently.
