WARNING: DELL OptiPlex 580 running Windows XP do NOT replace ATI Radeon HD 4200 display driver version 8.663.0.0 dated 10/6/2009 with version 8.821.0.0 dated 1/26/2011. Earlier this week I did this when using Windows Update and afterward it displayed the BSoD noted above.

On another message board I learned that if you have this display driver issue it will consistantly occur shortly after using the Windows Search Companion. Sure enough, within 30 seconds or so the animated dog quits moving, everything locks up, and then the BSoD is displayed. I verified this on the 2 DELL 580's that had the BSoD. The second one I was able to roll the driver back to the 2009 version and the problem was solved. On the first computer with the BSoD problem the driver will not roll back, so I am working on replacing the new driver with an old one some other way.

Problem solved: Installing the the AMD RS880 driver I downloaded from DELL's support website:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloa ... eid=371567

fixed the problem with the first DELL OPTIPLEX 580 that the Blue Screen of Death had appeared on. It replaced the Jan 2011 display driver with the one from 2009.
