New Computers - LanDesk

Hello,

I am the District Technology Specialist, and we just received new clerk computers from our FM Group for the Branches in our District.

I was wondering if LanDesk will work without the Church supplied Cisco router? (I know we are suppose to be using them, but this is under the direction of our local leaders.) I am not 100% sure what the LanDesk software offers? Is there a need to install it if we don't have the Church Routers?

Also, I have read on theses forums that the church only supports Windows XP for MLS, but I can't seem to find anything official on this, any direction to official system specs and support would be appreciated.

Your official source is on mls.lds.org. There you will find the Computer Management Software (LANDesk) download. You can also see the Local Unit Computer Instructions, which clearly state that you are supposed to install the Computer Management Software on all administrative computers. The software gives the Church the ability to push updates down to administrative computers (regardless of whether those computers use dial-up, Church-managed broadband connections, or other broadband connections).

If you follow the above referenced instructions, you only find direction to install Windows XP. That's official enough for me.

Those who have tried to install MLS on any other platform have had only headaches -- if you use the right compatibility settings, MLS with the test data can be made to operate with other versions of Windows, but the communication software isn't running in that configuration, and apparently that is the biggest challenge for different OS versions.

One on the main features of MLS 3.3 is Windows 7 support. Prior versions have some definitive issues with Windows 7 file system security changes.

Ahhh... there's a can of worms opening :)
