Different versions of Sophos??

Postby lrawlins » Sun Aug 22, 2010 4:42 pm

While having a nice hair pulling time trying to get Sophos to run on a FHC machine I noticed that Sophos downloaded via LANDesk is different than via MLS.LDS.org.

Are they indeed different? It seems a bit odd that the two sources would load different versions.

The MLS version is at 7.6.6 while the LANDesk version is at 9 something.

Is the LANDesk version simply a bit newer version?

Any insight is appreciated.

Regards,

It's always wise to follow Family History Department instructions and downloads for configuring FHC computers, and MLS instructions and downloads for configuring ward and stake administrative computers. I try never to mix them up -- the software is not intended to be compatible, as it comes from completely different Church departments.

Both MLS computers and FHC computers have LANDesk, so your description of a "LANDesk version" seems ambiguous.

Sophos Versions

Postby pierce1of5 » Tue Aug 24, 2010 8:32 am

I have one machine in the FHC that has the shield and the brickwall all the others have only the shield. Does that mean this one machine needs an update to the Sophos program?

Until the clerks office gets Net access where can you get updates to the sophos av program? is it at mls.lds.org? It doesn't update when we do "send and receive" with CHQ.

The Sophos software installation package may be obtained at http://mls.lds.org (you will need the password - see your stake clerk or stake technology specialist). Updates are not handled through the MLS software. The Sophos package itself checks for updates on a daily basis. Anytime you want to do a manual update you can do a right-click on the shield and select the update option.

I think something is wrong with the other machines. You may have the wrong version of Sophos installed. The starting place for FHC installs is remote.familysearch.org.

For clerk machines, the install is found at mls.lds.org. If on dial up, once installed, it will update itself as needed during various send/receives. It make take some time to do so.

Checking the machines last night, there indeed two different products:

FHC machines run Sophos Endpoint Security Version 9

Ward & Stake machines run Sophos Anti Virus 7.6.20

Any ideas why we have one product in FHC and another on the other machines?

Just curious,

As I explained in my previous post, these are from different Church departments, and have different target audiences. The Family History Department supports FHCs, and ICS supports administrative computers. Since they are two different departments, they have their own ways of packaging third-party software, and different development, testing, and release processes and schedules.
