If we want to get more RAM, what's involved? Does the Stake or the Ward or who pay? How much are we talking about, ballpark?

If the computer you're upgrading is an administrative computer that's in a ward or stake clerk's office, then the stake would pay for the RAM upgrade. As to how much - I'd recommend a full gig as a minimum. As you're the STS I'd recommend that you discuss your needs with the Stake Clerk to whom you would be reporting or a member of the stake presidency.

The responsibility falls to the stake, but if you follow the figures laid out below, you'll see it can be done for a minimal expense.

Any of THESE would probably work well. They run from $30 to $40 a set. (A "set" being two 512MB sticks of RAM.) You CAN install one set per PC bringing each PC up to 1GB, but from my experience, you won't see much (if any) improvement over running them with 512MB. Here's what I recommend instead...

Normally, these are replaced in pairs to allow memory access in Dual Channel mode, however, the difference in performance between Single and Dual Channel mode for what we are doing is negligible. What I suggest is open one PC and remove the two existing 128MB sticks and replace them with a single piece of 512MB RAM. Then use the two 128MB sticks to populate another PC's unused memory slots, bringing it up to 512MB also. This way a single set can upgrade 4 machines, making the total upgrade cost roughly $10 per PC.

I upgraded 9 computers to 512 MB in November 2008 for $113 using the approach Microwaved describes.
