By who? Is that a local decision to prevent problems? Or is something actually blocking you?

You could try downloading the security suite from mls.lds.org and re-installing it.

You'll have to explain this to me. Who or what is preventing you from accessing the Internet because there is no AV protection? Windows 7 does not require AV software for Internet access and there is no Church installed software that will prevent Internet access. Granted there is a Church policy that Church provided security software should be installed before using the Internet. But transmitting to CHQ is not prohibited in this situation. All MLS transmissions are secured. It is the general use of the Internet that is discouraged without security software.

Why is that? We have broadband Internet connection but still retain dial-up for just those situations when our Internet access is down. If you have a telephone line in the office and a modem in the computer then you should be able to use dial-up.

This past weekend as I was performing quarterly updates on our local unit computers, I came across some warning messages on a few of my ward computers that run Windows 7.

Some of you running Windows 7 may have noticed a recent Windows Action Center message within your Windows 7 system tray icon stating that your virus protection will not run. Further investigation into the issue revealed that Sophos is reporting that it is turned off. While the system provides an option for turning Sophos back “on”, when the user clicks this “on” button it will open a warning dialog box that reads, “This program will not run. Windows did not trust this program because its identity can't be verified.”

I was on the phone to Salt Lake this past Monday morning, and one of their technology supervisors stated that the issue is due to a contractual dispute with Sophos and that they hope to have this resolved shortly. Sophos continues to provide firewall protection and I was assured that our computers are not at risk for any compromise. There was no definite time-table provided to me for a resolution of this issue. I was simply told that it would be resolved “shortly”.

The Action Center is opened by clicking the flag icon in the system tray and selecting, “Open Action Center”. Alternately, you may access the Action Center by navigating to: Control Panel/System and Security/Action Center.

Hope this helps to explain the Sophos issue. Does anyone else have a similar story to corroborate the reason provided me?

What a perfect time to ditch Sophos for some less resource hogging security solution!

Except that decision is not up to the local leaders.

Which poses another question; why has the Church chosen not to run Microsoft Security Essentials? I've used it for years. It's free and I've never had any compromises on any of my computers.

I also use MS Security Essentials and generally like the product, however, their EULA restricts it's "free" use to home and small business users only.

...Probably implied something that's not entirely accurate.
We've had no Internet access beginning last week.
Stake tec specialist seemed to have fixed it long enough for us
to xmit after meetings, Sunday 08 Jan 2012.

Response from our Stake Tec Rep follows:

Acutally, the problem is that someone brought a router from home
to add more wired network connections to the network.
This router has DHCP inable and is passing out incorrect IP address information.
So your computer is looking for the wrong gateway to the internet.
AV would be a whole nother issue. But would not stop you from getting internet access.

B. H.

Well, I again unsucessfully attempted to access Internet, Wednesday 11 Jan 2012.

Ohhh, that can earn someone a reprimand if they did that at work.

We have had the same problem with all 8 of the new Dell GX580/Win7(32) since the middle of December. Local Unit Support (LUS) said at the time that they were aware of the problem and were working on a solution. When pressed for details they said it was an issue they are working on w/Sophos, but that the AV is still functioning. Did not mention the contractual issue.
