membership record for a passport

Postby alan8657 » Thu Jan 14, 2016 12:25 pm

we have a member in our ward that is applying for a passport. there birth certificate has a different spelling than his church membership record. he is applying for a passport and i quess he wants a copy of a church record with his correct name spelling. the rules for applying for a passport says he needs a copy of a official church document with his name spelling on a official church letterhead. is there anything i can do for them.

First, I would wonder why his membership record does not match his birth certificate. It should.
Next, he could get his birth certificate corrected.
Lastly, the bishop could write a letter on Church letterhead stating his name and date of birth as shown on Church records.

Contact Local Unit Support.

Note that the name on the record is supposed to be his legal name. (Handbook 1:13.6.1) If it's not matching other legal documents, it should be changed to match them, which defeats the member's purpose.

Note that by policy, membership records cannot be given to the member - but the IOS can. (Which is probably close enough). The whole thing about on letterhead makes this a "call support" deal in my book.
