Can't change name after divorce

#1

Post by Mr_Dove »

A member recently brought me the paperwork for her divorce so we could change her name. First I went to Marriage and clicked "terminate marriage". I went through those steps and entered in the data from the court order.

Next, I went back to her individual record and clicked "edit". I clicked the option for "divorce" but it keeps telling me that I need to add a divorce to the record first.

What am I doing wrong?

At least in the US a divorce does not necessarily legally change a women's name. So first you have to verify that as part of the divorce (or as a separate legal action) she did legally change her name.

If she didn't legally change her name then the her full name needs to remain the same but you can edit the Preferred Name according to her preferences.

If she did legally change her name then follow the action you did before to change the name but select "Verified Legal Name Change" instead of "Divorce" as the reason.

To change your name after divorce just get a certified copy of the decree. Following that check with the clerk of the court where your divorce proceeding was handled.
