Out of unit calling

#1

Post by aclawson »

Our ward has sent two members over to serve in the YSA branch presidency so that unit will be entering them as out of unit administrators in their MLS. Should something be showing up in our instance of MLS indicating that they have callings outside of our unit? The stake sunday school president has that calling appear in his local record, but these YSA leaders don't have anything showing up in MLS to indicate what their callings are. Is this by design or is something not happening the way it should?

Their names **DO** appear in the branch's CDOL record already.

You might want to create a custom calling just so MLS doesn't put them on the "members without callings" list. Other than that, no, there's nothing for you to do. It's all on their side.

I think you are mixing up the terms "out of unit calling" with the MLS "out of unit administrator" user account. Those are two completely different things - mentioned so others reading this thread do not get confused.

When a member is called from a unit in which their records reside to serve in another unit an out of unit member record is created. This record is created using information from the member's IOS. Once the out of unit record is created then the member is available in the service unit's MLS to record the calling. The out of unit record resides only in the local service unit's MLS. The calling is transmitted to CDOL for the service unit and not for the home unit with the membership record.

Only stake callings will appear in the home unit MLS. Out of unit callings in other units will not appear in the home unit MLS unless manually entered there. A membership record identifies the stake and the unit in which the membership record resides. Therefore members of a stake are available in stake MLS for stake callings without the necessity to create an out of unit record. A stake calling, an out of unit calling, is linked through CMIS back to the home unit. An out of unit calling in another unit is not currently linked back to the home unit through CMIS because the out of unit record only resides on the service unit's MLS.

The stake calling appears in the home unit because of the link through CMIS. The other out of unit callings do not appear in the home unit because the out of unit record only exists in the service unit's MLS. The link back to the home unit has not been made between CDOL and CMIS. Additional programming has not been completed to make that link.

The whole process of adding an out-of-unit member and giving them a calling in MLS has a lot of steps and quirks. I can't wait till everything moves onto Leader and Clerk Resources – at the LDSTech Conference last year they were demoing the ability to add people in another ward to a calling with just a membership record number. It will be so much simpler!

So Who creates this out of unit record? I am a stake clerk and we just called a new Branch president to serve. He is being called from a different ward than he will be serving in.

The current branch president or branch clerk can do it. In LCR, they go to Membership > Manage Out-of-Unit Members.
