Old memberships

We have members that moved out of state but have not moved their records, plus our branch just started a year ago, and we had records moved into our branch of inactive members that we have not seen at all. My question is is there any way of moving those members that we did not request out of our branch records?

There are two ways for membership records to be moved. Either the loosing ward can move them out or the gaining ward can request them. If the loosing ward has their new address they can move them out. If the loosing ward only knows they have moved but do not know where and it has been quite a while (a few months) then they can still move them out to address unknown. When this is done be advised that unless the membership department at CHQ can find where that family is currently those records could end up coming back.

For more information on moving records see the wiki article "Moving membership records".

When membership records arrive in a unit it is the responsibility of that unit to verify the location and status of the members. If these members do in fact reside within the unit boundaries the status of activity does not determine whether the records are retained or not. If however the procedures found in the wiki article "Locating members" is followed and the members cannot be found then the bishop/branch president should decide when enough effort has been expended to locate the literal lost sheep and have the records move out to "address unknown". Be advised that when records are moved to "address unknown" they can be expected to return.

There are other threads that discuss the efforts to locate lost members and how to help keep records from bouncing back.
