Slow wifi interrupting ward audits

#1

Post by funaddict »

I've conducted two ward audits in our Stake Ctr building in the last two weeks. Both times I was unable to complete the audit on my laptop, due to what seemed like a serious wifi speed lag. I gave up and switched to the clerks (Wards) computer which is connected by cord. With 2 or 3 wards all meeting in the building at the same time, and just about every man, woman and child connected to the buildings wifi, every time I entered an answer to an audit question it would take a long time until I could continue to the next question. Or it would let me answer 3 or 4 questions, and then the window would freeze, and then redraw itself, and I'd have to go back and answer the last couple questions again. Anybody else run into this problem, or just our building?
I also notice in my own ward building, the wifi is so slow, most people with phones just use their phone network instead of waiting for the wifi; something you can't do on a tablet or laptop without a cellular data plan.

WiFi is slowest in a meetinghouse when the most people are there. With two or three wards, members might possibly be using every bit of bandwidth available.

You often will have more success if you are able to schedule an audit during the week when not so many people are in the building or later on Sunday when most everyone has gone home. If you are able to connect directly to an Ethernet connection, that might help a little, but a clerks office usually only has one of those, being used by the administrative computer.

You mentioned that you were able to use the clerk's computer. It is possible that the WiFi access point is at some distance from the office. That will cause your laptop to run slower.

If you continue to have problems, ask your Stake Technology Specialist to help you with suggestions. He will be able to determine if the WiFi is saturated, or if you are too far from an access point. There have also been issues with the Church servers late in the morning on Sundays, Utah time, for the last few weeks.

Note that the church is in the process of changing out the APs, so I don't know as much would be done until the new APs are installed and it's found that the problem continues. As I understand it, the Cisco APs could only service so many clients. The new Meraki can can handle more.

By the approval of the Bishop or the Stake President, STS/aTS may turn of the access point in the specific building. But the problem here is what if the building are being used by more than 1 ward at the same time? so I think it would be a problem.

From Disabling Wireless Access
This feature should only be used under the direction and instructions of the Stake/District President responsible for the meetinghouse.
Of course, if you turn off the wireless, then the auditor doesn't have wireless access either.

In my case, that is easy. I unplug the switch that feeds the WAPs, and connect the auditor's laptop to the firewall. That's because all the equipment is in the clerk's office. I told the FM many years ago that all networking equipment should be kept in a locked cabinet, but he never considered it worth the budget cost.
