Deposit received by bank does not match the deposit as transmitted through MLS

Deposit received by bank does not match the deposit as transmitted through MLS

On November 26th 2017 our clerks completed and transmitted the weekly deposit. The total was for $40. The following day, the bank reported a deposit received for $70.00. We have reviewed the donations as submitted in MLS and are fully confident the $40 reporting is accurate. The discrepancy continues to show on our Unit Financial Statement as an Outstanding Reconciliation Item.

Any ideas on how this can be resolved? Do we call the local bank and ask them to investigate?

That is a good place to start. Most bank branches still enter the deposits manually and can on occasion make a typo. They should have the deposit slip in their records and can cross-reference the amount they entered. It should only take a few minutes for them to do this.

I did this a few years ago but didn't get the issue resolve for a few days since the branch auditor had to do the check and didn't think they had made and error until pressured by church headquarters to look into the matter. They corrected the error and all was well.
