Donations to Ward Giving Tree

At Christmas time, our ward over the last few years has put up a "Giving Tree" in the foyer. On the tree are tags for people to take if they want to do something for less fortunate families (annon of course). Listed on these tags are items family members may need, clothes, toys, etc. Some tags are for gift subscriptions to church magazines too.
We have alway used an Other account to run these through. Last nights audit says cash donations for magazines or in lue of toys should go through fast offerings so the donor get credit. My question is, if they get credit this way and not for donations fo presents - is this right? Maybe we should go only for cash donations.
Appreciate any thoughts.

It is good that there are so many generous people who want to help the needy. But it is true that the Other account should not be used to help the needy. From the
MLS Software Manual on page A-11, the following would be improper disbursements:
Checks from specially collected funds that are not authorized, such as “Other” funds collected to help a needy family (help for the needy is a fast-offering expense and should not be collected separately).
You should also be aware that there are specific restrictions on the use of Fast Offering funds, so some of these expenses may not be an appropriate use of Fast Offerings. These policies are detailed in the Church Handbook of Instructions, which the bishop should be aware of and follow. If he has questions, he should consult with the stake president.
