Doe, John* can't be merged into Doe, John

I have a husband and wife who appear in the donors list twice, each having an entry with an * next to their names and designating them as non-members and each having a regular entry. When I attempt to merge donors none of the four names show up as a valid selection.
What does the * mean, and how can I get the incorrect name off of the auto-population for weekly contributions?
