Signing cheques

Postby kinggrunt » Mon Nov 05, 2012 3:37 pm

When a cheque is issued there needs to be two signatures from the bishopric, Im wondering if ward clerks are also approved to sign cheques or does it fall under stake direction? I cant find anything about it in the handbook's.

Usually, the bishop decides who should be able to sign ward checks. The stake president could set a local policy in this regard, but I've never seen that happen in the 4 stakes I've been involved in.

In every ward I've seen, the bishopric and the financial clerk can sign checks. If you review section 14.6.7 of Handbook 1, you'll see that this practice is supported by the Handbook.

We have both the Ward Clerk, and the Assistant Ward Clerk (Finance) as signatories.

We also have the bishop, his counselors, and both the Ward Clerk and the Finance Clerk able to sign checks although usually it is the Finance Clerk and one of the counselors who ends up signing each check. We make sure at least one member of the bishopric signs (so never both clerks). We also make sure the Ward Clerk does all the finance training so he understands the guidelines surrounding signing checks.
