Tithing Summaries and Out-of-Unit Members

#1

Post by kmarsha »

The 3 August 2012 "New Tithing and Other Offerings Form" memo received from headquarters reads in part, "It <MRN> also allows all donations for a member to be summarized onto one year-end statement regardless of where the donations were made."

This seems to imply that donations now follow the member's records. If true, that implies clerks in a previous ward / branch will no longer be required to print and mail year-end statements to members that have moved.

Thoughts?

Those seem like logical deductions, but I'd be wary about relying on those conclusions. Saying that it "allows all donations for a member to be summarized onto one year-end statement" is not the same thing as saying that those statements will be distributed at any particular time.

Towards then end of 2010 (as we were in the midst of the transition to CUBS), there was a statement made in some official documentation that implied (rather strongly) the same thing (see the rather long thread Who Gets Tax Statements For 2010?). Many clerks got their hopes up that such statements would be delivered for 2010 by January 31, 2011. But it turned out that the hoped-for consolidated statements were not going to be delivered (see this post). Those who relied on the assumption that CHQ would take care of year-end statements for members who moved were disappointed and had to scramble to deliver such statements once they discovered CHQ was not going to handle it.

I'm not saying I know for certain that such statements will not be delivered by CHQ for this year, but I would advise against taking action (or inaction) based on an assumption that they will.

This same quote leads me to believe that our year-end statements should now include donations paid in a previous ward when a member moves into our ward. Is that not true?

If it is supposed to be that way, I am not seeing any donations to a previous ward on any of our records.

Am I missing or misunderstanding somethnig?

Well, I think you are making an assumption that is not warranted by the actual text. There was no wording that actually said that such statements would indeed be delivered this year.

I really doubt that any information about donations in previous wards would be downloaded to each ward's MLS. If such statements do get created, they would most likely come from Church headquarters, rather than the Church downloading all that information to each ward just so they could print comprehensive statements. But I find it hard to believe that such statements would be distributed this year (regardless of whether it is done by CHQ or local wards), given that we have received no specific communication on this topic.
