I was told that the Visiting Teaching reporting on MLS 3.4.3 had changed and that it records contacts only, it no longer specifies visit, phone or letter.

Is this true? I have a Stake Relief Society President asking me what she needs to say at her auxiliary training meeting and it would be helpful if I could let her know of any imminent changes.

I gather that 3.4.3 might be released in the next few weeks

Yes, that's true. The Release Notes for the beta say:

Visiting Teaching Reporting. Visiting teaching reporting has been simplified to allow a user to check a box to indicate whether contact was made with a sister.

And indeed, in the user interface of the MLS 3.4.3 beta, that's exactly how it works.
