Forum Changes...

As the forums continue to grow in users and in threads and posts, it becomes necessary that from time to time we review the current forum categories and forums. We do this to make sure that we can keep the forums easy to use, easy to find information, and easy to manage. On Friday (November 14, 2008) we will be making some substantial forum changes to consolidate some forums and to restructure to make it easier for all. Below is a list of some of the changes we will be making. These changes will require that the forums be down for about 1 hour on Friday. We plan on making these changes starting around 10:00 AM MST. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause anyone. Thank you for your continued support.

Forum Changes:

Announcements Category:
  • The Announcements Category will have a name change. It will be renamed to "What's New"
  • The "Links & Resources" forum currently in the "Community Discussions" category will be moved within this category.
Projects Category:
  • The Projects category will be deleted. All forum threads and forums within this category will be moved to other categories and forums.
  • The "Family Search, Genealogy, Software Development" forum and sub-forums will be moved to a new "Current and Future Church Technologies" category.
  • The "Family Search Wiki" forum will be moved to a new "Current and Future Church Technologies" category.
  • The "Online Scriptures" forum will be moved to a new "Current and Future Church Technologies" category.
  • The "Church Web Sites" forum and sub-forums will be moved to a new "Current and Future Church Technologies" category.
  • All of the threads within the "Other Projects" forum will be moved within a new forum under the new "Current and Future Church Technologies" category. This forum will then be deleted.
Community Discussions:
  • "Tom Welch's Blog" will be renamed to "LDS Tech Featured Article Discussions" and will contain all of the featured articles on the home page of the tech web site. We will not be going back and adding old articles, but all new articles will be placed here.
  • The "Current or Future Church Technologies" forum and sub-forums will be moved to the new "Current and Future Church Technologies" categories.
  • "Links & Resources" is moved to the "What's New" category as mentioned above.
Current and Future Church Technologies
  • There will be basically three category forums within this forum that many of the above forums will move to. They include:
    • Family History - This forum will contain sub-forums for FamilySearch products, FamilySearch wiki, Genealogy Industry Issues, and Software Development
    • Church Websites - This forum will contain sub-forums for LDS.ORG, Technology Web Site, Online Scriptures, Unit Web Sites, and Other Web Sites.
    • Other Technologies - This forum will be the catch-all for other forums being moved from the deleted "Projects" category.
Clerks and Technology Support
  • We will be moving the "Building to Building Communications" forum to this category.
  • "Local Unit Copiers & MFPs" forum will become a sub-forum of the FAQs for "Local Unit Copier Program" forum.
We hope that these changes will make it easier for you to use the forums.

As far as threads and posts, I doubt the IDs of threads and posts will change with this update. The thread and post IDs aren't tied to anything but a unique indentifier for itself, and that is the way the URLs work with this forum software. I can move a post to a different thread, but the URL can remain the same (example: http://tech.lds.org/forum/showthread.ph ... #post12345).

As for URL's that take you to a view of a Forum itself, many of those might actually be affected. So maybe if you have a subscription to a Forum (which I'm not sure is possible or not), then maybe you are affected.
