When the Church has need of help from the technology community, we will post that need in this forum.

Does Mormon Channel really use MMS does is it use RTSP?

Postby Ryan Gardner-p40 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 10:38 am

It seems odd that the Mormon Channel would use MMS instead of RTSP - since MMS is basically dead.

The reason I ask is because if its using WMA over RTSP I can have an android client written very quickly (since rtsp and http streaming is supported as part of the normal android API)... MMS I'd have to port libmms or something to android and I don't feel like doing that.

This post from a Church Employee will answer your question regarding MMS and RTSP:

As for porting libmms, I'm one of the developers trying to work on the Windows Mobile version of the application and I think I'm at a point where I have to resort to this as well.

And to quote him:

All of the content EXCEPT the Mormon Channel radio feed are just links to MP3s and so the iPhone downloads them via HTTP. The radio feed, however, is an MMS feed of a WMA formatted file. This is a requirement of the content delivery network vendor we are using.

Hmm... implement / port an MMS library - or wait for the vendor to upgrade to decent server software... hmm...

The MMS spec doc I found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc234711(PROT.10).aspx

I haven't exactly jumped on the bandwagon yet either in porting the library. But if you're fine waiting, then that's your answer. From my discussions with Church Employees, I don't get the impression that the stream is hosted in-house.

In doing a bit of digging, I found android has a nice native code wrapper so it might not be hard to use libmms after all.

We'll see how far I get once I get a chance to start working on it. Work is very busy now so it might be a while... maybe by then rtsp will be used.
