The effort needed to dig back that far might be worth a article. That's not VHS. Possibly it was saved on film, but it looks more like video tape. Probably a standard that's in the dust bins of technical history. (Anyone remember U-matic?)

Throughout the 70s and 80s conference was recorded on 1" Type B Video Tape. Starting sometime in the early 90s the standard switched to Digital Betacam Tape. Due to the age of the 1" tape it has started to deteriorate which is one of the reasons this digitization effort was started.

It has been quite the process to digitize and encode all of the content for web delivery and many people have been involved. We're glad to hear that it is being used!

I miss the 2" tapes from the 60s. Did any of them survive, or is early 70s as far back as conference is going to go online?

According to the linked article, Digital Betacam wasn't introduced until 1993. Perhaps it started with a earlier Betacam format and then switched to Digital?

My bad--I thought DigiBeta started sooner. The format was 1" until the Digital Betacam era. I've edited my post to reflect the correct dates.

The church has preserved video of conference since the first televised conference in 1949. Currently the scope of the project that is currently being worked on will only publish back to 1970 online while digitizing back further for preservation purposes.
