I asked Tom (through PM) about the effort to unify Church logins. As it seems neutral enough for public posting, I've quoted his response:

So, in short, I hope it will eventually unify LDS.org, LDSCatalog.com, FamilySearch.org, the ward websites, and other Church-sponsored sites (perhaps even this site eventually
). I would hope they'd consider some ways to allow non-member registration as some have suggested as well as a process to perhaps base your account on a GUID so you can change your screenname at will.
