I just noticed on my public user profile this field called "referrals." Just out of curiosity what is it?

During the registration process, a new user can type in the "username" of the person who referred him to the site. So, each time somebody enters your user name in the "referrer" field during registration, you get an extra point.

Is there any way you can update who referred you AFTER registration? My referrer would be tomw! :D (Go Tech Talks!)

I think tomw would be the largest referer of the entire site! :D

No, it does not allow you to change it.

Most people don't use that feature because when they hear about the site, the person telling them about the site does not think to put give the potential new user their username to enter in as the referrer. To date, we have only had 23 people enter in the username of the referrer. Of those, Joel Dehlin is winning with 4 refers. The reason he is winning is because he used his real name as his user name. People just typed in his real name and he got credit. I had 3, "The Earl" had 2 and the rest only had one.

What do you think of having a little friendly competition where people try to get others to sign up. You would send all of your friends and family an email telling them how to sign up if they are interested and then making sure they put your username in as the referrer?

I think that's a great idea...in fact, it made me think that might be a good addition to the site, some sort of "Refer a Friend" email form you could submit.

What does everyone else think?

I think it is a great idea. I think it might fan the flame of interest and new users to the forum. Now that it has been running for awhile there is quite a bit of good information.

As a marginally social only-member, I'll just sit back and watch the fun. :p

Hmmm. I joined due to your post to a genealogy group somewhere--I don't recall which one. Since this type of group is new to me, I didn't notice the referral info when I joined. Oooooops! I have mentioned the group to others, but no bites yet.
