There is a service called Slack https://slack.com that provides real-time communication/collaboration and supports code-snippets and custom integrations, such as test/build notifications, jira, trello, etc.

While forums and wikis still have their place, there's something to be said about the personal, real-time interaction between people; interaction that doesn't carry the weight of a formal process (submitting tickets or creating forum threads). I believe this tool would allow for an even greater number of developers to more quickly engage with one another and get involved with LDS Tech projects.

Is there anyone at LDS Tech that would like to take lead and setup an official Slack team?

I agree this would be awesome to have to get better communication flowing

I also think slack or a chat tool would be great.

Personally, I don't see the value of Slack for LDSTech in general. It can certainly be helpful for a team that is actively working on a project, but such a decision would be left to the project team members.

What would be the purpose of this proposed general LDSTech Slack instance? What kinds of discussions would fit these criteria?

• NOT related to a particular project;
• Need to happen in real time.

I'm having a hard time imagining what fits both those criteria. And if it fits only the first, then these forums seem to be quite adequate; whereas if it fits only the second, then the project's chat system would be the right place for the discussion (which could well be Slack, but could also be any number of other options).
