I've noticed that doing send/receive from MLS gets progressively slower as the weeks/years pass by. With the original initial install it was very fast. Each week thereafter it has gotten progressively slower to send/receive changes, even when the amount of changes in a given week should be less than previous.

Does anyone know if MLS synchronizes its data with church HQ by pushing its entire DB back to church HQ?
Is "incremental" the word you were looking for?

Based on the symptoms you report and my own observations, I'd say it appears MLS pushes the full DB (or at least much more than just the raw incremental changes) each time send/receive changes is done. When I was stake finance clerk, I would send/receive after doing just one deposit and three checks and have it send several megabytes over dial-up. Ouch! We had units that had significant increases in their phone bill (metered local calls) due to MLS send/receive taking so long.

It would be nice to have a more efficient incremental send/receive operation or broadband speed.

DJC wrote:One possibility could be the anti virus program. If you are running the desktop 5.5 with Symantec as the anti virus/firewall, it could be that the virus definitions are out of date. When MLS connects to CHQ, a portion of the bandwidth is opened to allow for Symantec to get the latest virus definitions. If it is up to date, this process shuts down and the connection is then fully dedicated to MLS transmissions.
We noticed this pre-desktop 5.5.

That would most likely be me :) At least I'm responsible for MLS in the district, and upgrading the RAM for all the district (we found that desktop 5.5 was too slow with the 256mb of RAM the machines shipped with).

Yes and no. The time is increasing, yes. But I was referring to why that might be. Iterative may have fit better.

I believe a full backup of the database is sent about once a month. That would account for some, but not all of what you are seeing.

The tip to update the Symantec is a good one. It has solved problems for at least one other person. The Desktop instructions states that it should be updated at least once a quarter.

Most of my district doesn't even use the new desktop software. The latest is unusably slow with 256mb ram, and I've not yet had a chance to upgrade all the district PCs (I'm in a district that is nearing 400km end-to-end).
