Having spent some years working with the youth or our church, I've found that there is an enormous amount of time and effort that one could spent in helping the youth track their efforts and then consolidate them with church records. Furthermore, it would be nice to help our bishopric have statistics of where is the overall progress of the youth by quorum, age group, organizations, etc. There are a number of "services" that can be "plugged in" to our wonderful MLS system that can improve the service a member can give. Does anyone know if this is possible or whether there is something one can do about this.

Especially with the new Faith in God program, it would be great to have a way to track the progress. But I am not sure MLS is really the right place to do this.

The Church does not have a way to do this yet but there are several community projects around youth tracking. Check out http://www.ymyw.org for an example.

This made me wonder if there is going to be an API released for MLS or if we will just need to get someone to export the data and give us the csv it provides.

For now your best bet is to use the CVS exported file.

Third Party Plugins

Last year, while serving as a ward clerk, I used the CSV export functionality of MLS to feed an application I wrote to automatically generate a ward photo directory (for a BYU student ward). Is this the sort of "plug-in" application the Church is inviting third parties to create? Is the Church looking to eventually bundle things like this into MLS or merely inviting others to create them for commercial purposes?

It's not that the Church is looking to bundle plugins in MLS. That may or may not happen and will be the decision of the department that defines the MLS application. However we are encouraging people to share with others the applications, utilities, etc. that you have created so that others can benefit. If you want to sell your product, we ask that you not promote your application here as it is expressly prohibited by the the terms of use and code of conduct found on our community guidelines page.
