yahoo....It's fixed. After going through the logs and finding out when this error started, it correlated with updating Java. So I removed Java from the computer and re-installed, not without problems though
Eventually after all the errors that Java was giving me, I got it removed from the system and installed Java 1.7. We can now do perform backups in MLS.

That's odd. Yes, MLS uses Java, but it uses a separate instance from the usual Java engine that you can see and update. There's usually no interaction.
