When I was on my mission in Northern Virginia they had an overlay 703 and 561 so all the records had the area code. When I entered baptismal records I didn't think twice about putting the full 10 digit number in to the system.

When I was made the Ward Clerk about a year ago I noticed that all the phone numbers were 7 digits. I didn't think much of it until now. After reading the article I started thinking about how 7 digits in MLS must be dealt with at church HQ. I haven't yet checked the MLS manual does it say to enter the phone number in 10 digit format or does it matter. It seems like if it mattered they would make it a validated field.

I think I will discuss it with my Stake clerk and start making the changes in anticipation of the overlay. The benifit of doing it early is that our membership clerk will be in the habit of putting in the area code when it happens.

Thanks for all the reply's from John Taber and others.

As far as I can tell, the phone number field in MLS is just a text field. It's formatted the way you entered it.
