I need a little handholding to initialize the test version of MLS, which I have downloaded and installed on an XP laptop.

I am immediately prompted to enter my ward's unit number, just as I would for a live installation. But I am intending to use the test install (in this case MLS v 3.1.0b8 beta) populated with the standard test data. I had understood that the test unit has its own fictional unit number.

Do I have the right install package for my purposes? Or do I need to take special steps to use this one with the test data?

At the point where it asks for the unit number enter 108, the test ward number, and it will install the test data for that unit. For the test stake enter the number 2224445. No special steps are required. The test data can also be installed along with real unit data on a unit administrative computer. The instructions are at the wiki article MLS test data.
