can stake clerk work off a ward MLS?
i have just been called as stake clerk and live 30 minutes from the stake centre. I am 5 minutes from my home ward. Can I set up the ward computer to work on stake business through MLS?

Not really. You can move the MLS database to the ward computer, but then no one would have access to it at the stake center.
The MLS database can only be on one computer. Remoteing into the computer to use MLS is prohibited by policy.

Re: can stake clerk work off a ward MLS?
That's an interesting question; I don't know the answer in terms of policy, but I can answer the question in terms of technical possibility.
MLS does allow multiple units, including a stake unit and a ward unit, to share the same installation on a single computer.
However, a unit can only function from one MLS installation at a time, so if you begin using your ward computer for stake MLS accounts, the stake computer will no longer be able to send and receive changes without disabling your stake MLS on the ward computer.
To switch computers, you would back up the stake computer's stake MLS onto a USB drive (just a standard data backup will do the trick). Then, go to the ward computer, log in as the ward, add a unit under System Options, log out and then log in to the new unit, and restore from backup.
Finally, you will need to call Local Unit Support to reset the security key so that you can send and receive on the new computer. Have your stake unit number handy. This last step can only be done during Local Unit Support business hours, so don't try to migrate on Sunday.

Note, this is likely to play havoc with any changes done on the stake computer between the time it was backed up and when you restore the new backup. Most certainly anything entered between the time the ward computer is made active and when you get back to the stake computer will be lost since the stake computer will be unable to send any changes. For example an assistant clerk trying to activate recommends or cut checks. Plus, if you call in for a security reset every week, I think some questions are going to be asked.sbradshaw wrote:Finally, you will need to call Local Unit Support to reset the security key so that you can send and receive on the new computer. Bottom line, moving between computers was designed to deal with things like computer failures and upgrades. It was never intended to be used on a routine basis.

thank you all for the info. Both myself and my truck know the way to the stake centre so the work will go on.
