Attempted Use of USB 3.0, Failed

Postby jfackerson » Tue Sep 23, 2014 11:23 am

New ward DELL PC has 4 Super Speed (SS) USB 3.0 ports -- 2 in front, 2 in back.

I replaced our externally powered USB 2.0 hub -- added for convenience --
with a 3.0 version.

I assumed that such a change would increase download speed
for backingup MLS to 3.0 flash drives.

Wrong. Actually resulted in our backups requiring more time
downloading.

Someone believed that this was due to our PC running a 32 bit O. S. rather than 64.

Yes I did install required 3.0 USB cable and updated drives.

Any thoughts?

Are you plugging in the flash drive directly into the computer?

Have you checked the write-speed specs on that flash drive? Perhaps the 3.0 is there only for reading speed and it's a slow writer.

Are you backing up directly to the stick or doing to hard drive and they copying to the stick? The way MLS writes the data could be a problem if the stick has no cache.

...Not plugging flash drive directly into PC.
From ward's PC's Super Speed (SS) 3.0 USB port,...Using a powered USB 3.0 hub connected by 3.0 rated USB cable.

Don't know how to rate 3.0 USB flash drives.
My copy is a USB 3.0 SanDisk Cruzer Glide, 8GB.
Another is a USB 3.0 DataTraveler G4.

...Have usually backed up directly to our on-site flash drive and then
copied from that flash drive to my personal off-site flash drive.

Before removing....Never have had to "dismount" these flash drives.
We just pull them out before storing one within our locked file cabinet.
The other one goes home with me in a metal encased wallet.

That's a lot of pieces to the picture. I'd simplify it by plugging directly into a front port and see what happens.

Plugged into front USB SS slot, MLS backup file requires about a minute and a half (90 seconds) to download to 3.0, 8 GB flash drive. Same flash drive placed within a USB 2.0 slot requires about the same 90 seconds. A USB 2.0 flash drive plugged into a USB 2.0 slot requires only about 30 seconds for receiving download from MLS backup.

Sounds like a flash drive with a slow write. Or perhaps the USB 2.0 has it's writes cached somehow.

The backup process itself does take some time – it's not necessarily the writing speed of the USB drive that makes a difference. If you save a backup file directly to somewhere on the computer it will still take a while to save.
