Replacing Oracle's Java with JRE

Since Oracle is proving to be unable to patch the security holes in their Java product will removing it completely and replacing it with the open sourced JRE break anything?

(By the way, it is strongly recommended that you remove Java from your home PCs completely. If you must have Java installed use JRE instead. As a bonus every time you update JRE you won't be asked to install unwanted software and toolbars.)

Yes. There is http://openjdk.java.net/ - an open source JRE replacement.

Still related to Oracle, but while the mainstream java is not open source, this project is.

Note that MLS installs it's own copy of Java that's hidden. You can uninstall any other Java you have. Since I don't think it's connected to your browser, it shouldn't be a problem.
