New mls windows 7 computers and old printers

#1

Post by stephen500 »

I found a way of savingt money for the church, when installing new mls computers.
We have a hp laser 1000, which was not compatiable with windows 7.
However there is a fix.
Download the driver for the defunct printer.
Go to properties and change it to work in compatiable mode for windows xp.
Run the printer driver and save it to a file. (remember where!)
Go to printers and add printer.
Now say have disk and point to find and install from there.
Provided it has been set to compatiable mode it should work.

The problem with printers like the HP 1000/1100 LaserJet series, is they can ONLY connect with a parallel port interface and the newer Dell (Windows 7) computers the church is buying doesn't come with a parallel port. Parallel to USB adapters are available, but their success is somewhat spotty. For the price HP wants for their "POD" USB cable (if they're even still available), a person could just about buy a whole new printer.

I looked at this quite a bit when our stake's new PC's came in from the church, and decided rather than spend more money on the two (rather slow and outdated) HP 1100's still functioning in the stake, I opted to have the FM group replace them. They had no problem with the request.

While I know some old printers are parallel port, I thought the 1000 was USB, or at least came with the adapter. I remember being envious that it came with a driver to route LPT1 to the printer so that old MS-DOS programs could still print.

But the point it valid - check the connectivity.
