Birth Place Required to Edit Preferred Name

Our branch just received the records for a new family. I was editing the preferred names for each of the members, but when I try to update the son's record to not show his first given name (he goes by his middle name) it won't let me (the save button is grayed out).

I discovered that it requires his Birth Place to be added (currently blank) before I can change the Preferred Name. I thought this was odd, since it didn't require the birth place to create the record in the first place.

Any thoughts?

I'd ask the parents for the birth place. Looking at my test copy of MLS, birth place is required when creating a record. Not sure why that record doesn't have it. Perhaps it came from some other area where it wasn't required or failed to make the transfer when the record was created.
