I've contacted a few finance managers on this subject. I've updated the wiki site and added the section 'Determining Tax Amount Entered in MLS.'

There are a lot of different situations depending on location. I had to be brief to take into consideration all locations. Thanks for the posting.

Thank you for the clarification -- it's a relief to finally have this resolved.

The next step would be to make sure that everyone in Local Unit Support understands that sales tax is to be recorded on every check (only in the locations the policy applies to, of course). This confusion was caused in large part because a couple of people in Local Unit Support erroneously told clerks who called to inquire about this policy that there were some exceptions for fast offering checks.

It might also be good to send an MLS message clarifying the policy. Clearly there are some clerks who (quite understandably) think there are exceptions and are not recording sales tax on every check. It would be a pity for the Church not to reclaim all the sales tax that is paid because of this misunderstanding.
