HQ Correcting MLS Computer Name

Postby tullisda » Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:02 am

Headquarters will send the following edoc to the wards towards the end of the month. There could be some ramifications for wards whose computers are not named properly

Correcting your Clerk Computer Name
In 2012, the Church is dedicating more resources to improve clerk computers. To receive this help, your computer must be named correctly. The correct naming standard is “LU-” and your local unit number. For example, if your local unit number is 17833, your unit’s computer name is LU-17833.

On January 29th, Church Headquarters will begin automatically updating incorrect unit computer names. If needed, you can change your unit’s computer name in advance on your own. If your unit’s computer name conforms to the standard, nothing will be changed.

This activity will not impact your computer unless you’ve set-up peer-to-peer networking, printer sharing or installed other software that’s set-up with your old computer name. If this is the case, you will need to reset them to use your unit’s correct computer name.

Would it be possible to send an edoc to the stake showing which wards in their stake will be getting the names changed?

I assume this applies to Stake computers as well, but could that be confirmed?

I believe so, but can't confirm it.

The name change may impact those who have networked computers or printers. After the name change, if the computer is networked, the printer may not be accessible. However, the user can plug the printer directly into the computer and it should work.

Also, if someone has installed software that references the computer name, the software may not work with the new name.

HQ will correct computers that are not correctly named but no notice will be sent informing users of the changes.

Right-click "My Computer" and select properties. On XP, I believe that's the first thing that comes up.

On Win7, you need to click on "Advanced system settings" and select the "Computer Name" tab.

Actually, on Win7, you can simply right click on Computer and select Properties (same steps as on WinXP, except "Computer" in place of "My Computer"). In the box that pops up, the name is displayed (in the "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" section). There's no need to go to the "Advanced system settings" tab.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.
