Remote access to office MLS computer.

I'm sure this has been asked and kicked around quite a bit but most of the forum message I've read were several years old. Are there any plans to make available remote access to the MLS machines that reside in the church houses? Is it approved, and if so are there guidelines around doing it? What is the official policy? Approved in some cases, discouraged, etc? Thanks

There are clearly some people doing this (see Remote support/control software). But if you read the fairly recent thread Remote Desktop Connections and MLS, you'll see that some people have both policy and technical concerns. I certainly haven't heard of any official software for such remote access (except for the LANDesk remote control agent, but that is used only by Church employees in their role supporting local units).

The bottom line is that the current official policy is so fuzzy on this particular topic that no one can make a definitive statement. So my response would be that you make yourself aware of the policy, vague as it is, then consult with the stake technology specialist (which may be you -- I can't tell), who then can consult with the stake president, who would make the decision for his stake.

LANDesk Remote Control

Snipped from FHC Document ID: 100100
"Family History Center Directors, Stake Technology Specialists (STS), and Stake Indexing Directors can have access to use the Remote Control tool to support their centers."

Pete's Notes:
It requires a patron to be at the desktop when you remote control it
FHC Learning Module: LANDesk Remote Control (LDS217)
Doing acriticalneed, we did use LANDesk to access an MLS desktop

If you're going to quote a statement, it would be most helpful to explain the document you are quoting from.

But in any case, the topic of this thread is MLS computers, and your quote deals with FHC computers, so I don't see how it is germane.
