If I add a missionary couple as out of unit members of the ward in MLS, will they be able to access our ward's directory and maps from lds.org?

They are from the local area, but are called and set apart missionaries. Their records are in their home ward.

Last I heard (which was early this year in this post), adding people as out of unit members to MLS had no effect on access to the online directory or maps.

Our out-of-unit leaders (ysa stake) are able to access the directory and maps, but that may be more due to their callings than the fact they are set up as out-of-unit (bishoprics, high councilors and stake presidency). We've had some issues with the calendar. No harm in trying it out, though. Be aware it'll take a couple days before the system grants permission.

I'm pretty sure that out-of-unit records are local to MLS and don't provide any special access on lds.org. However, once you have an out-of-unit record you can assign the person to a calling--which is sent to CDOL. And callings in CDOL can provide access. But I don't know whether all callings provide access or just certain callings do.

I would try assigning them to a custom calling of some sort in MLS and see if that does the trick.

I would agree that it will likely only work if they are given a calling in the ward. I would also argue that that calling should be a standard position, not a custom one. From the trick mentioned in this post, I've discovered that my bishoprics have access to their home ward and stake through policy-ldsunits (where their records are) and to the ysa ward and stake through policy-ldspositions (units associated with their callings in CDOL).

Custom positions don't end up in policy-ldspositions only standard ones do. And it wouldn't surprise me if it only works for certain positions.

I'm an assistant wardclerk, with access to CDOL. My header contains the following:

policy-ldspositions: p162/7uWWWWWW/5uSSSSSS/: p787/7uWWWWWW/5uSSSSSS/
policy-ldsunits: /7uWWWWWW/5uSSSSSS/

My significant other is the ward RS president. She does NOT have access to CDOL. When she tries to log on, she is told: Your assignment has no rights assigned which allow you to view information within the Church Directory.
Her header entries are identical to mine, except the strings in blue are 143 and 152, respectively.

I'd say I'm out of luck, unless we make the missionaries assistant clerks (I need a big toothy smiley right here). Which could be problematic for the Senior Companion, given, uh, the lack of precedence for sisters serving as clerks (another smiley).
At any rate, we don't necessarily need them to have access to CDOL, more the ward/stake directory and maps.

I don't think there is any direct relationship between access to CDOL and out-of-unit access to directories and maps. All callings are listed in CDOL but only a few actually grant access to view things in CDOL.

So there is still a small possibility it could work. There is a standard position under Other Callings called simply Missionary. Since that calling seems appropriate in this instance you could try assigning them to it. It may not work but it shouldn't hurt to try.
